Hip(ster) Hop… And You Don’t Stop
November 20th, 2007If you’ve ever been to the kind of club night that one might label “scene,” the subject of this post is nothing new to you. DJ’s have been blending your favourite grimey rap verses with basically any dance music with more than 110 beats per minute (B-More, Electro, House, etc.) for years now. So, you might ask, what’s new? Well, MC’s have actually been rapping over this stuff by their own free will lately. Most notably: Kanye, Lupe Fiasco (sort of) and some lesser known cats like Wale and Mickey Factz. Personally, considering where music is going right now (in large part thanks to the DJ’s nowadays) I’m not surprised at all. The lines between different genres are only becoming more blurry as time goes by.

I like some of these songs and everything but it’s good to keep in mind that this concept isn’t new. I say this partly because mainstream music has already been heading in this direction for a while, and partly because Outkast did this with ‘B.O.B.’ way back in 2000. In any case, it’s all still worth a listen so here are some other artists to check out who’ve been doing similar music: Uffie, Kid Sister, M.I.A., Lady Sovereign (I guess?), Hollywood Holt, and Spank Rock.
Enjoy the downloads below, and feel free to leave a comment letting us know what you think.
